Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
