Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
