2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Mixed Response
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct direction.
The president expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete content from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most well-known series in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
The game does not have an official launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can expect further news as development continues.
